Dan Fishback may sound like a cross between Liz Phair and Fievel from “An American Tail,” but he came of age listening to Tori Amos cds in his bedroom, writing trite “coming out” poetry, and praying that one day he would take part in a queer cultural revolution, where sexuality would be re-imagined in politically
positive, non-violent ways. He still prays for that day, but he hasn’t listened to Tori Amos in years, and he doesn’t write poetry anymore: he sings songs.
After writing songs for years, Dan finally learned how to play a few guitar chords in college, where he swam through oceans of radical literary theory, and learned never to use cheesy, faux-poetic phrases like, “swam through oceans of radical literary theory.”
Dan moved to Queens in 2003, where he ghost-writes memoirs by day and thinks about performance art by night, occasionally voyaging into Manhattan for an actual engagement (mostly at the Sidewalk Cafe, cuz that’s where all his new friends are at, and cuz he’s lazy).
Dan recently received the following note from someone who saw him perform: “Your songs are bare and nervously vulnerable and I like these things about them. So this is to say...Happy Valentine’s Day! Everyday the Fourteenth!”
When Dan isn’t performing solo, he rocks out with his band, Cheese On Bread. His bandmate, Sara FitzSimmons, is really awesome.
Dan is currently writing a play about Sophie Tucker, Anne Frank, and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.
He misses prose.
He’ll have an album really really soon.
